Avian Influenza: Dr. Sheila  Purdum, Nebraska Extension Poultry Specialist, asked us to share the following information about avian influenza. Unfortunately, Nebraska has HPAIH5N2 in a commercial flock of laying hens in Dixon County. This is the same virus that has been infecting turkeys in MN and WI and laying hens in the state of IA for the past three months. It is a deadly flu virus to poultry, killing as many as 90 percent of the flock within three days of the first symptoms. The  major source of the virus has been migrating waterfowl, but it is believed to be airborne, now traveling on numerous vectors  o include people’s clothing,

Clinton Griess of Hampton, NE, is putting his agronomic and seed experience to work for AgVenture of Nebraska (AVN) Seed Partners. Griess will provide professional seed services and access to AgVenture® brand seed products to area farmers as an AgVenture Yield Specialist.

Sandy Creek FFA Announces New Officers

Nine seniors hung up their blue jackets for the final time at the Sandy Creek FFA Banquet on Friday, May 1. The night began with opening ceremonies presented by the officer team and a welcome address from Emmet Caldwell. After the meal, one of the first awards presented was the Star Greenhand Award. Each year, this award is presented to the most active first year member who has shown leadership and has a strong, supervised agricultural experience. This year, the award was earned by Bayley Cox.

The Minute Milkers 4-H Club met on April 7, 2015, at 4 p.m., in Fairfield at the fire hall. Hannah McDaniels opened our meeting as the acting president with the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H pledge.

UNL-Extension Teaches Proper Veggie Planting During Gardening Workshop

A small crowd filled numerous tables for the Vegetable Gardening Workshop at the Clay County Activities Building on April 16. Participants grabbed a plate of food and were ready to go a little after 5:30 p.m. Nebraska Extension Educator Elizabeth Killinger was the speaker, and the main items she discussed included the benefits of gardening; methods of gardening; plant selection; transplanting; raised beds for vegetable crops; and common garden pests, diseases and problems.

I’m so thankful for the much needed rain and hoping that those who kept missing the rains earlier have now received some. Last week, I spent a few days looking at winter wheat. Disked areas, loose seedbeds, places with too much residue or too little residue all contributed to winter kill and also what appeared to be winter kill 10-14 days ago. However, many of the fields had small sprigs of wheat coming through these areas, so I called Bob Klein, Extension Cropping Systems Specialist, to learn his experiences. He said these new sprigs can still make wheat (up to 2-3 tillers with no more than 15 kernels). Farmers with bare areas in these fields were considering putting on a residual herbicide to help control emerging weeds (if they aren’t planning on a cover crop after wheat) or planting oats or soybeans in bare areas and just harvesting around those areas to ensure there’s not oats in the wheat grain at harvest if going to the elevator

Farmers in the area of the former town of Verona helped the Clay Center and Sutton Volunteer Fire Departments battle the April 1, fire with tractors, disking up ground where the fire had burned.

Steve Domm Named CEO at Cooperative Producers, Inc. (CPI)

Hastings, NE–March 25, 2015: The Board of Directors of Cooperative Producers Inc. (CPI) has announced that Steve Domm has been selected to serve as Chief Executive Officer, effective May 11, 2015.
Domm will succeed Bob Fifield, who served as CEO of CPI until December of 2014.
