Rural Fairfield resident Dennis L. “Doc” Washburn, 71, passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2023, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings.

A Rosary was said at 10 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial followed at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Deweese, with Father Adam Sparling officiating. Burial took place at St. Martin’s (Loucky) Cemetery near Deweese.

Memorials may be given to Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church for renovations. The service was live-streamed on Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home’s website. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family. Doc was born Nov. 12, 1952, in Fairfield to LeVern R. and Vida (Cook) Washburn. He attended Fairfield Public Schools until eighth grade, graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1971 and was in the first class to attend Sandy Creek High School for four years. After graduation, he attended Central Community College in Hastings. Doc married Deloris Drudik on April 19, 1975, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Hastings; this lovely marriage made two lovely sons, Ricky and Timmy Washburn.

Doc farmed in the area for many years. He was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Deweese where he played the organ from 1975 to 2000. Doc played music in dance bands for his hobby. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing pool, hunting, and collecting guns. His favorite saying was “Give me the news.”

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sharon Washburn.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years (April 2024) Deloris “Dee” Washburn of Fairfield; sons, spouses, and families: Rick and Adriane Washburn, Grand Island, Carson, Tynli, and Cael; Tim and Randi Washburn, Lincoln, Harper, Brooks, and Grayson; sister and spouse, Sonnie and Marion Fike, Fairfield; sisters-in-law and spouses: Barb Drudik, Hastings, Marietta and Doug Soucie, Juniata, Deb and Gary Hinrichs Hastings; numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family and many friends.
