Don was born May 19, 1934, to Fred G. and Esther (Saathoff) Harms in Hastings. He was baptized, confirmed, and was a lifelong member of Glenvil Immanuel Lutheran Church. After graduating from Glenvil High School, Don enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1954-56 in Panama.

Don knew that farming was in his blood and continued to work the land God had blessed his family with. This would be his passion for all his years, respecting the land given. He met the love of his life, Barbara Phipps, in 1959. With a short courtship, Don knew what a gift he was given and asked Bobbie for her hand. They were united in marriage March 27, 1960. They farmed together, raised four children, and were active in the community. They enjoyed card parties, traveling bus trips, camping, and just relaxing on the porch.

Don’s favorite times included family get-togethers, supporting his children’s activities, chasing grandchildren’s sporting events, and fishing. He loved to read, hunt, and have coffee with friends. Every conversation was a treasure to him, and he was always ready to listen. Don was an active member of the Glenvil American Legion Post #26.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Bobbie; son, Douglas Harms of Glenvil; son and spouse, Daniel and Kim Harms of Glenvil with children, Danielle and Aarin Fellows, Ashlee Harms; daughter and spouse, Susan and Mark Roland of Grand Island with children RaeLysa and Evan Hansen, Sydney Schmitt, and Austin Casselberry; daughter and spouse, Amy and Bill Sullivan of Glenvil with Benjamen; great-grandchildren, Landon, Emmalyn, Nora, and Henry Fellows; brother, Eldon Harms; sister-in-law, Katie Phipps; brother-in-law, Dale Hinrichs; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
