Isabel Montgomery

Isabel Montgomery

December 2, 1917 ~ February 10, 2025

Isabel Maxine (Boberg) Montgomery, age 107, passed away on Monday, Feb. 10, 2025. Isabel was born Dec. 2, 1917, on the family farm in Eldorado, to Alfred and Eleanor (Johnson) Boberg.

She attended school in Saronville and Eldorado and graduated from Harvard High School in 1934 at the age of 16. After graduation she moved in with her Grandpa and Grandma Johnson to find work in Lincoln. She worked for the State of Nebraska before becoming a legal secretary for the Woods & Aitken Law Firm, where she worked until her retirement. On Nov. 29, 1947, Isabel was married to James T. Montgomery. They loved to camp and fish, taking their camper to many local area lakes and campsites. Together, Jim and Isabel also loved to go to auctions. Isabel was also a lover of garage sales and would spend many a Friday and Saturday hitting the sales in northeast Lincoln. When Jim retired from Burlington Northern Railroad, Isabel retired too, and they became “snowbirds” for a number of years, trading the cold Nebraska winters for the warmth and sun of Arizona.

Even more than traveling and garage sales, Isabel loved her family. She was our Matriarch—the one who kept tabs on all the family members, where they lived, who they married, their children and their accomplishments. Every visit with Isabel started with her asking, “What’s new in the family?” Even though recent memories started to fade, Isabel held onto those long-term memories of family and friends and loved to reminisce about her Clay County days.

Isabel is survived by her sisters, Helen Burbach and Grace Boberg; nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; sister, Shirley (Armin) Gemar; and brother, Byron.
