Virginia Onken, 92, of Aurora, formerly of Glenvil, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024, at CHI Immanuel in Omaha. Family graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14,in the Glenvil Cemetery. No visitation. Rev Jonathan Jehorek will officiate. Memorials may be directed to Crossroads Mission in Hastings and Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenvil. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Virginia (Ginny) Lee Onken, the daughter of Glen and Mary Ellen (Purdie) DeBord, was born in Osmond, Oct. 18, 1932. She grew up in Osmond and Norfolk and moved to Hastings in 1943. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1950. On Feb. 22, 1953, she was united in marriage to Melvin Onken. They had one daughter, Susan. Virginia worked at Leverage Tool, as secretary for Immanuel Lutheran Church and with Mel at the credit union as needed. Mel passed away on April 3, 2007. In 2021 she moved to East Park Villa in Aurora where she has since resided.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenvil Firemans Auxiliary and the Hastings Quilt Guild. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, needle art, camping in the bus camper that Mel built, and spending time with family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Glen DeBord; and sister, Toni Svoboda.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Sue (Tim) Eckert of Marquette; four grandchildren, Zach (Celean), Nick (Emmalee), Zoe and Noel; and three great-grandchildren, Gracelynn, Daxtyn and Weston. She is also survived by her brother, Jim (Judy) DeBord; sister Carole (Elwood) Onken, and many nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
