Sutton Juniors sweep Hastings Runza during May 29 doubleheader

Following a 16-1 route over Friend to start last week’s action for the Sutton Junior Legion baseball team, Sutton hit the road, Wednesday, May 29 for doubleheader action at Duncan Field in Hastings, where Sutton earned a pair of wins over the Hastings Runza Juniors, taking the first game 11-7, and the nightcap 17-6, starting the year with a 4-0 record.

Following a 16-1 route over Friend to start last week’s action for the Sutton Junior Legion baseball team, Sutton hit the road, Wednesday, May 29 for doubleheader action at Duncan Field in Hastings, where Sutton earned a pair of wins over the Hastings Runza Juniors, taking the first game 11-7, and the nightcap 17-6, starting the year with a 4-0 record.

Game one produced nine hits for Sutton in the five-inning affair, with Wyatt Pollet pounding out three singles in three at-bats, while Caleb Reiners added a double and a single.

Crieghton Jones also rattled a double in the win to score one run, while singles came from Weston Ohrt, DJ Hajny, and Cash Parrish.

The Mustangs held a 7-1 lead after three innings of play, before Hastings held a 6-4 scoring edge in the final two innings, setting the final score at 11-7.

Hajny gained the win on the mound, as in four and a third innings of work, Hajny struck out two, and allowed four hits and six runs.

In relief, Ohrt struck out two and allowed one run.

In the nightcap, the Sutton bats remained lively, outhitting Hastings 11-4 to gain the eventual 17-6 victory.

Sutton jumped out to an early 9-0 lead at the end of the first inning, before Hastings went on a 6-1 run in the second frame to set the game at a 10-6 Sutton lead going into the third inning.

Sutton sealed the win outscoring Hastings 4-0 and 3-0 in the final two innings to gain the 11-run win.

Ohrt had the hot hand at the plate, driving in three runs, while pounding out a triple, a double, and a single in four trips to the plate.

Pollet drove in two runs on a trio of singles, while Kaleb Ostrander drove in three runs behind a double and a single.

Landon Mierau added a pair of singles, while Jones, Hajny, and Parrish all had one single each.

Pollet earned the win for Sutton on the mound, striking out three, while allowing four Hastings hits, and the six Hastings runs.
