Sutton golf team edges Doniphan-Trumbull by 2 strokes for team title, Friesen is individual champion

Sutton’s 2024 boys golf team found themselves in a big situation following the completion of the Sandy Creek Invitational, Tuesday, April 16, as the Mustangs held off two other strong teams in Doniphan-Trumbull and Sandy Creek to claim their first team title of the season.

The tournament, held at the Crooked Creek Country Club’s nine-hole course in Clay Center, earned Sutton the team title by two strokes over second-place Doniphan Trumbull, and by eight strokes over the host Cougars.

Sutton, behind the impressive play of their two medalists, Jadyn Friesen and Harrison Herndon outshot the Cardinals 333-335, while Sandy Creek ended the 18hole tournament with a 341.

Friesen claimed the individual championship behind a stellar score of 74 to win by four strokes over second-place medalist, Lukas Armstrong of Red Cloud, as Armstrong fired a 78, as did third-place medalist, Hayden Dzingle of D-T.

Friesen’s opening-round would see the junior shoot a 36, while rounding out the day with a 38 for the gold medal finish.

Herndon cashed in for a fourth-place finish, as the Sutton junior shot a 79 to follow Friesen, Armstrong, and Dzingle.

Herndon opened play with an opening round 39, before wrapping up the back-nine with a 40.

Junior Aidan Jones finished just outside of the top 10 in the tournament, carding an 84, leaving him one stroke short of the top 10 finish.

Jones opened up the tournament with a front-nine 43, before bouncing back on the back-nine with a 41.

David Fonseca wrapped up play with a 96, as he had a 49 on the front side, and a 47 on the back-nine, while Carson Mau carded a 101, shooting scores of 52 on the front, and 49 on the back.
