After a little “figuring the Blue Devils out,” to open the Sutton Mustangs D1-3 Sub-District final, Thursday, Feb. 22, the Mustangs put together a good ole’ fashioned woodshed moment with Kenesaw, as Sutton outscored the Blue Devils by 11 points in the third quarter to lead the Mustangs to their 14th win of the season and a trip to the D1-7 District final, which was slated for this past Tuesday night, Feb. 27 at Southern Valley High School.

The final was to pit the Mustangs against the Dundy County/Stratton Tigers, a 20-5 club, and winners of the D1-10 Sub-District title over Cambridge, winning 54-32 over the Trojans.

Junior Harrison Herndon, senior Cole Baumert, and sophomore Keith Kliewer powered the Mustang offense, combining for 42 of Sutton’s 59 points.

Herndon led with 18 points, Baumert dropped in 14, and Kliewer, 10.

Junior Aidan Jones added eight, sophomore Payton Reed, five, and junior Weston Ohrt, four.

Sutton claimed a 17-11 first-quarter lead, and behind a 14-12 second-quarter run, led 31-23 at the half.

Sutton built its lead to 4930 at the end of the third with the 11 point scoring difference before closing out the win with a 10-9 fourth-quarter scoring edge to chart the 20-point victory and improve to 14-10.

Sutton was 24-56 from the floor (42.9%). Breaking down their shooting efforts, the Mustangs were 14-32 from two-point range (43.8%), while from threepoint range, Sutton was 10-24 (41.7%), while only stepping to the foul line three times to make one foul shot.

Reed led the charge on the glass, as he gained 10 total boards. Herndon followed with five, and Ohrt four.

Jones gained six assists, and Reed four, while Baumert and Herndon dished out three each. Herndon led the team with two steals.
