A tough night on the glass nearly made for an upset win for the 3-10 Ravenna Bluejays, Tuesday, Jan. 16, as the ‘Jays held a strong 33-17 rebounding edge over the Sutton Fillies, but a never quit attitude by Sutton helped the Fillies earn a hard fought 42-40 overtime win to improve to 8-5 with the win, while dropping Ravenna to 3-11 with the loss.
Sutton held a 20-18 halftime lead, but Ravenna, behind an 11-6 third quarter run, and a 7-4 Sutton advantage left the game at a 33-33 tie at the end of regulation, where in the bonus period, Sutton outscored Ravenna 9-7 to gain the win.
Sutton shot just over 31 percent from the floor, making 15 of 48 total shots. The Fillies were a solid 46.2 percent from two-point range, making 12 of 26 shots from short distance, but a tough 3-22 effort from threepoint range (13.6%) hurt the Fillies offensive output.
Sophomore Miranda Nuss and senior Reagan Robinson paced Sutton with 22 of the Fillies 42 points. Nuss tallied 12, and Robinson 10.
Sophomore Kyla Griess added eight points, with junior Jacee Haight adding seven and sophomore Avery Smith five.
Ravenna was 14-38 from the floor (36.8%), and was perfect in 10 free throws, while Sutton was 9-14 at the line (64.3%).
Nuss and Robinson also led Sutton on the glass, as both had four caroms, while senior Tori Peterson and Griess had three each.
Smith and Haight had two assists to lead, while Nuss and Griess led in steals with three each.
