The Clay County News 2022 Family of the Year

'Faith, Family and Community is the core of the Parrish family'

In the Summer of 2015, Zach and Tessa Parrish, along with their infant daughter, Brynn, made the move of their life that brought to this young Sutton family a sense of true community and happiness.

Little did they know, however, how much that move would mean to the community of Sutton and the school district of Sutton Public Schools, not to mention the youth of the community and school, but also the impact that the Parrish family has had on so many the past six-andhalf to seven years.

Over the course of their lives in Sutton, Brynn, who is an 8-year-old second grader at Sutton Elementary, has helped her parents welcome two little brothers into the world since their move from Friend.

Levi, who is a student in Gwenda Mau’s preschool, is an energetic 5-yearold, while Cade is 3.

In a nomination letter received from Jed, Heidi, and Jesse Bergen, the Bergen family highlighted the impact that Zach and Tessa have had on many, including students and adults, whether it be through the school district or as leaders of the Federated Church’s youth group and youth prayer group.

SCUD Board hires interim superintendent

The South Central Unified District Board approved hiring Stephen Grizzle as interim superintendent for the 2023-24 school year.

Grizzle is currently the superintendent at Fairbury Public School, and was one of three candidates interviewed for the position.

“All three were really strong candidates,” SCUD Board member Brian Shaw said. “All three interviews were really good, and what a great problem to have to need to choose between three strong candidates.”

Shaw and board co-president Donita Furman said they hired Grizzle for many reasons, including his years of experience as a superintendent; his strong financial background and comfort with budgeting and numbers; and the amount of knowledge he has on the district.

Sutton Chamber honors Douglas, Parrish couple at annual meeting

Two awards were given out during the Sutton Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting Monday, Jan. 23.

Kathy Douglas was honored with the Volunteer of the Year award for her continuous efforts in giving back to the Sutton community and helping out during annual events.

“It’s no surprise that they are willing to give so much back to this community,” Tony Huber said while reading an announcement letter.

Shannon Mendez read the letter announcing the Friends of the Community award, which was given to Zach and Tessa Parrish.

“The sacrifice of your time has been immeasurable, whether it’s for a small group or numerous teams.” She said, adding “coaching, teaching, praying for, and loving every child in the community is how they live...both are passionate about our community and with an emphasis on our youth...this family is dedicated to the success of each and every student; their hearts are open with no judgment for everyone they encounter.”
