Sherrie Bartell, president of the Sutton Argonne Legion Post #61 Auxiliary has announced that a special ceremony will take place at the Sutton City Cemetery, weather pending, Saturday, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m., in accordance to the National Wreaths Across America Day, that will feature over 3,700 ceremonies accross the United States, Puerto Rico, and on foreign soil.
Bartell shared that the Sutton Auxiliary originally planned to purchase 200 wreaths, but has since purchased a total of 400 wreaths to honor fallen veterans in Sutton’s public cemetery.
The cost to sponsor one of the wreaths is $17 each, with $5 of each wreath going to the local auxilary post. In all, Bartell shared that there are 386 veterans buried in the Sutton cemetery.
You can contact Bartell at 402-460-0234, or email her at: [email protected], if you would like to donate to the program.
“We’ve had a wonderful response already, with a few donations in excess of $850, but we’ll take donations at any time for this project, or any other project that donors wish to support,” Bartell shared.
The Sutton leader also pointed out that several organizations have indicated that they will help place wreaths on the headstones of those fallen veterans. “We’re blessed to have somany wonderful people and groups that are stepping up to help us with this first year of participating in the Wreaths Across America program.”
“We just wanted to find a way to keep our organization out in front of the community, so I looked this program up and felt that it would be a rewarding and memorable program to take part in.
Donations may also be sent to the Sutton American Legion Auxiliary Unit 61, PO Box 182, Sutton, NE 68979 or by dropping off to Bartell at 214 N Saunders Ave., in Sutton.
Wreaths Across America started as a simple gesture of thanks that has grown into a national movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service, but to teach the next generation about the sacrifices made for us to live freely. This year there will be more than 3,700 participating locations placing veterans’ wreaths on National Wreaths Across America Day–Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, with more than two million volunteers coming together.
