Junior Keith Kliewer had 20 of Sutton’s 40 team points in action at the Thayer Central Invitational in Hebron, Thursday, April 3.
Kliewer began his day with a win in the gut-wrenching 400-meter dash, claiming gold with his time of 54.34 seconds to out-run second-place Drew Menninga of Pawnee City, as Menninga finished with a time of 55.21 seconds.
Kliewer then teamed up with Connor Hinrichs, Payton Reed, and Juan Reyes to claim gold in the 1600-meter relay, winning by six-tenths of a second over Deshler.
Sutton finished on top with a time of three minutes, 42.28 seconds, while Deshler was the runner-up with a time of 3:42.89.
Hinrichs added a fifthplace finish in the 300-meter hurdle event with his time of 45.17 seconds. Event winner Anthony Kline of Pawnee City earned gold with a time of 44.12 seconds.
Sutton claimed gold in a non-scoring event, the weightman’s relay, as the team of Weston Ohrt, Aydin Banta, Kade Jones, and Jacob Huxoll earned the win over Sandy Creek with a time of 51.97 seconds. The Cougars finished second with a time of 52.1 seconds.
Field event action added two team points to the Mustangs’ cause, beginning with Brody Borgmann’s sixth-place finish in the triple jump, as Borgmann hit the 26’ 2” mark in the event. Fairbury’s Nic Smith claimed gold with a 39’ 3” effort.
Cordell Ochsner placed sixth in the high jump with a 5’ 2” leap. Kling of Pawnee City captured gold with a 6-foot leap.
