Sutton is 5th during season-opening invitational, May 25
Powered by six medal performances on the track and a gold medal performance in the triple jump, the Sutton boys’ track team began the 2025 season on their home track, placing fifth overall with 47 team points.
Heartland ran away with the team title, outscoring second-place Sandy Creek 136.5-74.
Sophomore Connor Hinrichs was the lone gold medalist on the track for Sutton, winning the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.52 seconds, outlasting second- place Wyatt Hemberger of Sandy Creek who hit the finish line in 45.16 seconds. Three events would gain runner-up finishes for the Mustangs, including a two-medal performance in the 100-meter dash, where Creighton Jones finished second with a time of 11.85 seconds, while teammate Jacob Huxoll placed fifth overall in 12.1 seconds.
Jones also went on to place sixth in the 200-meter dash with his time of 24.23 seconds. Heartland’s Samuel Friesen claimed gold in the race with a time of 23.25 seconds.
Junior Keith Kliewer earned silver in the 400-meter dash with his time of 54.4 seconds. Heartland’s Luis Alvarez won the one-lap sprint with a time of 51.77 seconds.
Kliewer, Hinrichs, Jones and Payton Reed teamed up to place second overall in the 1600-meter relay with their time of 3:38.8. Heartland earned the relay win with a time of 3:34.2.
Sutton’s lone medal in the field events came from freshman Max Huxoll, as the Mustangs youngster claimed gold in the triple jump with a 40’ 1.5” effort to edge out Shelton’s Logan Eutsier for the win, as Eutsier sailed 39’ 5.5”.
