THE BULL
Football season is officially over, and for me, it didn’t end well, but with that said, it’s certainly not the end of the world either, as my Kansas City Chiefs laid a pretty big egg Sunday night in their quest for a thirdstraight Super Bowl title.
I’ve been a Chiefs fan since I was a little kid, getting my first Chiefs helmet when I was probably in kindergarten, maybe first grade. I had to have one so I could join in the kids pick-up football games in the big empty lot next to my house, or at another big lot a few blocks away.
We didn’t have gaming devices, and inside did our “gaming” outside, no matter the elements.
So that loss Sunday night, as a loyal Chiefs fan, all I can say is that we’ll be back! But to lose the way Kansas City did Sunday night was a really hard pill to swallow, but it’s obvious that Philadelphia was definitely the better team Sunday night...in a dominating way.
Some side thoughts about the festivities Sunday include how awful (in my opinion) the half-time show was. I honestly turned the channel after about two minutes and watched Ice Road Truckers, or something like that, turning back to Fox now and then, and to me that hot mess seemed like it wasn’t ever going to end, but thankfully it did.
Commercials...There were a few decent ads that I really enjoyed, with my favorite probably being the Jeep ad featuring Harrison Ford. Crazy thing about that ad is that Jeep dropped an estimated $32 million to air it. But the statements that Ford shared that really stood out to me were: “Freedom is for everybody. But it isn’t free. It’s earned.”
The ad went on to hit me with a couple other good lines, such as “There are real heroes in the world, but not the ones in the movies. Real heroes are humble, and they’re not driven by pride.”
The real stand-out statement was this (for me anyway) “The most sacred thing in life isn’t the path. It’s the freedom to choose it.”
The most clever ad, with humor, was the Mt. Dew ad featuring the vocal artist Seal in the middle of a large body of water, on top of a rock looking like a seal, with others around it.
I’ll admit, I’m not a big fan of Mt. Dew, but it certainly was the most clever, again, at least to me.
The most hilarious, even though it’s not the most hilarious Super Bowl ad I’ve ever seen was the “Case of the Monday’s” ad from Coors Light, showing life moving at a lightning-rod pace, but the sloths not being able to keep up with the pace of life...if that makes sense.
I will admit though, there has been no Super Bowl ad that in my opinion comes even close to the 2013 Dodge ad that featured Paul Harvey in the “God made a Farmer” ad. That still resonates strongly with me and from time to time, I pull that 2013 ad up on YouTube.
BACK TO REALITY
So now that football season is over, we’re past the conference wrestling and basketball tournaments, it’s time to buckle up for a heavy-duty run for the final push in the winter sports season.
The Sandy Creek and Harvard girls had their wrestling seasons come to a close in district action this past weekend.
This weekend is the boys turn to take on the post-season wrestling tournament with districts at Shelton High School this Friday and Saturday. Good luck to the Cougars, Mustangs, and the Harvard/Giltner grapplers, who luckily for me, are all in the same district in my hometown of Shelton.
Next week will be the start of the girls sub-district tournaments for Sutton, Sandy Creek, and Harvard. Seedings for Classes C-1, C-2, D-1, and D-2 will be announced this Thursday. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Instagram social media outlets to see where the Cardinals, Cougars, and Fillies will play.
State wrestling is Feb. 20-22 in Omaha, with the boys sub-district tournaments set to run Feb. 24-25, and Feb. 27.
Good luck to all of our Clay County teams as you enter the post-season in the next few weeks.
