Fillies rebound for SNC 3rd place hardware over Scouts

After reeling from the 6137 semifinal loss to Milford in the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament semifinals, the leftovers of that setback to the Eagles lingered into the first quarter of Sutton’s battle with David City for the right to claim the consolation prize in the tournament. The Scouts opened the game on a 16-2 run and led 18-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Once the Fillies got through that tough opening quarter, however, the light at the end of the tunnel shined brightly.

Sutton outscored David City 48-30 to come-from-behind and place third in the tournament with a 54-48 victory, pushing their season record to 16-6.

Sutton gained a 21-19 scoring edge in the second quarter, but trailed 37-27 at the half. In the second half, the Fillies went on a 27-11 scoring run thanks to a stingy defensive effort both with a full-court press and half-court defensive effort.

Sutton had a very balanced scoring attack, led by Jadlynn Kinney’s nine points, followed by an eight point performances from Avery Robinson, Jacee Haight, and Avery Smith.

Adding to the scoring was Miranda Nuss with six, Isabella Trejo with five, Kaci Yost and Kyla Griess with four each, and Kamryn Steinhauer with two.

Sutton was 21-50 from the floor (42%), and hit on four of seven foul shots (57.1%).

Sutton dropped in eight three-point buckets, compared to nine for the Scouts.

Haight and Nuss led on the glass with seven rebounds, while Griess grabbed six.

Sutton dished out 19 assists in the victory, led by seven from Avery Smith, and five from Griess. Griess also led in steals with two.
