Following a tough quarterfinal round loss to Milford, the Sutton Mustangs got back on their feet in a consolation round game in the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament. The 35-32 opening-round loss to the Eagles forced the top-seeded Mustangs into the consolation game, where they would gain a much-needed 48-31 win over Fairbury to move to 15-4 on the season.
The first quarter of play was sluggish for both teams, as Sutton held a narrow 5-4 lead, before the Mustangs warmed up in the second quarter to outscore the Jeffs 19-7 and claim a 24-11 lead at the break.
Sutton then went on a 24-20 second-half run to gain the 17-point victory.
Sutton was 16-44 from the floor (36.4%) and drained 12 of 17 foul shots (70.6%), while defensively, Sutton held the Jeffs to just under 33 percent shooting, making 13 of 40 shots, while connecting on just three of nine foul shots (33.3%).
Harrison Herndon powered the Sutton offense with 11 points, followed by nine points from Aidan Jones and Max Huxoll, while Payton Reed added eight, and Keith Kliewer five.
Jacob Huxoll and Weston Ohrt both had three points in the win.
Ohrt and Jones led Sutton’s rebounding effort with eight, and seven, respectively.
Jones dished out three assists, while Herndon claimed four of Sutton’s 10 steals.
