Fillies come-from-behind to trip Sandy Creek’s girls 45-42

In a typical clash between the Sandy Creek and Sutton girls basketball teams, the Clay County rivalry game came down to the waning moments Thursday, Jan. 30. The Fillies, who trailed throughout much of the opening three-quarters of play, outscored the Cougars 14-8 to walk off the Fillies’ home court with a 45-42 win to improve to 13-5, while the Cougars fell to 11-6 with the loss.

Sutton held the early lead at the end of the first quarter, 9-7, but Sandy Creek, behind runs of 15-11 in the second and 12-11 in the third, took a 34-31 lead into the final eight minutes, where the six-point run by the Fillies produced the three-point victory for the Fillies.

Jacee Haight and Kyla Griess paced Sutton’s offense with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Jadlynn Kinney added eight for the Fillies.

Caitlyn Biltoft and Carrigan Rempe both had 10 points for the Cougars, while Ryleigh Skalka added nine, and Morgan Petr, eight.

The Fillies shot just under 31 percent from the floor, hitting on just 13 of 42 total shots, while the Cougars were 16-51 (31.4%).

Sutton was 7-21 from twopoint range (33.3%), and sank six of 21 three-point shots (28.6%). Sandy Creek hit on nine of 27 two-point buckets (33.3%), while draining seven of 24 three-point attempts (29.2%).

At the foul line, Sutton was 13-21 (61.9%), while Sandy Creek was 3-9 (33.3%).

Haight led on the glass for Sutton with eight, while Miranda Nuss, Kamryn Steinhauer, and Griess had five each. As a team, Sutton held a 33-27 rebounding edge.

Emma Fisher led the Cougars with 10 boards. Rempe gained seven rebounds, while Biltoft and Petr both had four.

Rempe had a game-high seven assists for Sandy Creek, while Avery Smith led the Fillies with four.
