SPS Board reorganizes, discusses & approves items
Sutton School Board members reorganized for the year and heard reports from administrators during their meeting Jan. 20.
Board elections resulted in Jim Jones Jr. as president; Jerry Overturf as vice president; and Teryl Andersen as secretary. Additionally, Erin Huber was appointed as the board treasurer.
High School Principal Jason Cafferty reported the parking lot lights have been installed and progress is being made on the new security cameras throughout the school.
Following the resignation of Bailey Ulmer, who served as the vocational agriculture teacher, Brooke Waddell and Gwenda Mau have taken over the agriculture program and are doing well thus far, Cafferty said.
Cafferty also discussed implementing a trial run for an open campus lunch for seniors. Parents would need to sign a waiver should their senior choose to participate in this.
Many items were discussed but will not be considered until the February board meeting.
Items included a five to 10-year project plan, presented by SPS Superintendent Brad Best, curriculum, transportation, and technology.
Additionally, it was mentioned that the gymnasium floor has not been sanded down since 2011. It was suggested the board consider refinishing it again.
SPS Elementary Principal Michael Shively proposed going back to four days a week for preschool in both sections, to align with Rule 51.
Board members unanimously approved a door replacement bid from Nebraska Door and Window not to exceed $100,000. The two main entrance doors will be replaced to increase security.
They also approved the principal’s contracts for the 2025-26 school year.
