Mustangs move to 12-3 after wins over Ravenna, Fairbury last week

The Sutton Mustangs ran their season record to 12-3 last week with dominating wins over Ravenna and Fairbury, outscoring the Bluejays on the road 63-34, before returning home to blitz Fairbury 82-44.

The wins helped the Mustangs secure the top-seed in the upcoming Southern Nebraska Conference Tournament, which is set to begin Monday, Feb. 3 in the Sutton Dome.

Sutton’s first-round game will be Tuesday, Feb. 4, where they will host the winner of the Milford-Heartland firstround game at 6 p.m. in the Sutton Dome.

No details were shared about the Mustangs’ 29-point road win at Ravenna, in a game where the Mustangs held leads of 16-13 after the first quarter and 29-26 at the half, but a scoring explosion in the second half gave the Mustangs a 34-8 scoring run to secure the 63-34 win.

As Sutton returned home for SNC play against the Fairbury Jeffs, Harrison Herndon and Payton Reed combined for 42 of the Mustangs’ 82 points, with Herndon draining 26, and Reed, 16.

Herndon scorched the nets, shooting 62.5 percent from the floor, going 10-16 overall, while Reed drained six of seven shots overall.

Max Huxoll added nine points, with Aidan Jones hitting eight, and David Fonseca, six.

As a team, Sutton was 31-52 from the floor (59.6%), including a strong effort from three-point range, going 12-23 (52.2%).

Sutton held leads of 24-8 after the first quarter and 42-21 at the half, before outscoring the Jeffs 40-23 in the second half to gain the 38-point victory.

Reed and Herndon also led the team on the glass, as Reed brought down eight boards, and Herndon, four.

Fonseca and Jones dished out three assists to lead, while Herndon and Reed had four and three steals, respectively.
