Cougars move to 5-6 with sweep of St. Cecilia, St. Paul last week

Jacob Petr jumps up to block a layup attempt by a St. Cecilia player.

The Sandy Creek boys had a big week of action this past week, picking up a pair of much-needed wins to run their record to 5-6, with a 6457 victory over Hastings St. Cecilia at home, followed by a 46-43 road win at St. Paul.

The Cougars won Thursday, Jan. 9, against St. Cecilia with a key performance by Ethan Shaw, as he had a season-high 35 points shooting 75 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line.

Sandy Creek held St. Cecilia to eight points in the third quarter, which helped in the win as St. Cecilia made a late push in the fourth, taking the lead. This wouldn’t faze the Cougars, however, as the hot-hand Shaw got the ball in the late stretch to hit some layups and free throws.

Shaw had 35 points, Kamerin Sealey had 17, Evan Swartzendruber had eight, Jack Clark had three, and Christian Shaw, one.

The Cougars had 33 total rebounds with 20 on defense and 13 on offense, and were led by Shaw’s nine boards, along with eight from Jacob Petr and five from Sealey.

The Cougars collected nine assists, and 12 steals with Sealey and Petr dishing out three assists, while Swartzendruber led the team with five steals.
