Plagued by 18 turnovers and a tough night of shooting, the Sutton Fillies pulled off an old-fashioned cardiac thrilling win over the Centura girls Tuesday, Jan. 7. The Fillies came from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to outscore the Centurions 16-6, to claim their eighth straight victory with a 39-35 win to push their season record to 8-2.
Sutton shot just over 21 percent from the floor and 60 percent from the foul line, as the Fillies were just 12-56 from the floor and 9-15 from the charity stripe.
Sutton made six of 33 two-point buckets (18.1%) and sank six of 23 threepoint shots (26.1%), but despite their shooting woes, the Fillies stepped to the plate big time in the fourth quarter, going 5-16 from the floor (31.3%) and 4-6 at the foul line (66.7%) to complete the come-from-behind win.
Centura opened the game with a 13-7 scoring run in the first quarter, before the Fillies cut the six-point Centura lead to four at the half with an 11-9 rally in the second, setting the game at a 22-18 Centura lead at the break.
Centura then regained their six-point edge in the third quarter with a 7-5 run to take a 29-23 lead into the fourth quarter, where the Fillies set off the fireworks with a 16-6 fourth-quarter run to secure the four-point victory.
Avery Smith led Sutton’s scoring attack with 11 points, while Miranda Nuss returned to action after an injury to score eight, with Jadlynn Kinney adding seven, Jacee Haight, six, Kyla Griess, four, and Isabella Trejo, three.
Nuss’ presence back on the court was felt big time on the glass, as she brought down 10 rebounds, with Haight gaining six, and Griess, five.
Griess dished out five assists to lead the Fillies, and joined Kinney to make four steals each, while Haight gained three steals in the win.
