Sophomore Madalyn Andersen’s second-place run in the 105-pound weight class led a strong day for the Sandy Creek Girls Wrestling team at the Fillmore Central Invite in Geneva, Friday, Jan. 3.
Andersen’s day paced a group of four medalists in Geneva, as she scored 21.5 team points and ran her season record to 8-6 with four wins in five matches.
Andersen opened with three pinfall wins over Kobie Kosek of Centennial, coming in 2:25, over Arianah Linden of York, with a 1:42 pin, and over Taylor Baxter of Doniphan-Trumbull by way of a 21-second pin.
In the semifinals, Andersen gained a 2:54 tech fall win over Savannah Leiting of Seward, before Louisville’s Paytin Thiele captured gold over Andersen with a 31-second pinfall win in the finals.
Adding to the scoring and medal count was Paige Stengel with nine points, while Lily Everson and Zailey Spilker both added seven points. All three earned sixth place honors to the Cougars credit.
Stengel, in the 120-pound class, won three of five matches, pinning Amelia Juranek of Seward in 56 seconds, gaining a 1:36 tech fall win over Narissa Wallace of Palmyra, and adding a 1:44 tech fall win over Vanessa Gonzalez-Mendoza of Malcolm.
Cherish Faircloth of Wood River and Kyler Sladek of EMF earned pinfall wins over the Cougar freshman.
Everson’s day in the 115-pound class earned her a pair of pinfall wins, pinning Yesenia Perez of Lincoln Northeast in 25 seconds, while pinning Centennial’s Corey Payne in 2:03. Everson was handed three setbacks on the day, falling to Bettie Chambers of Palmyra in 2:23, falling in 3:19 to Ashlin George of Adams Central, and to Wood River’s Elizabeth Gottlob in 41 seconds.
For Spilker, she also charted a pair of pinfall wins, the first over Maura Vrbka of Fillmore Central in 2:49, and over Ta’Leigha Watkins-Steele of Lincoln Northeast in 3:50. Losses for Spilker came at the hands of Catalina Jones of Louisville in 50 seconds, to Caley Abell of Centennial, by way of a 1:48 pin, and to Allie Johnson of Wood River, in 3:00.
Falling short of wins in the tournament were Olivia McBride in the 110-pound class, Amber Meyer in the 120-pound class, Cailee League in the 125-pound class, and Ebony Tripe in the 190-pound class.
