Hinrichs, Bergen go undefeated for Sutton wrestling on home mats
Highlighted by a pair of undefeated runs by sophomores Connor Hinrichs and Griffin Bergen, the Sutton wrestling team hosted their only home event Tuesday, Dec. 17, giving their hometown fans a chance to watch the Mustangs in action.
Hinrichs’ unbeaten run earned him three forfeit wins against Centennial, Freeman, and Thayer Central. Against Pleasanton, wresting in the 144-pound class, Hinrichs pinned Ian Baker in just 45 seconds, while against Wood River, in the 150-pound class, Hinrichs pinned Joaquin Avila in 1:47.
Bergen’s run at home gained him a forfeit win against Pleasanton while recording a 1:47 pinfall win over Centennial’s Parker Dishman in the 190-pound class. Against Freeman, Bergen pinned Cale Behrens in 50 seconds, against Wood River, Bergen pinned Bryan Flores in 2:46. He finished off his day with a 1:52 pinfall win over Thayer Central’s Jayleb Guthrie.
Senior Billy Marshall claimed four wins in five matches, gaining a pair of forfeit wins against Freeman and Pleasanton, while pinning Centennial’s Lane Johnson in 1:08. Against Thayer Central, Marshall pinned Dylan Williams in 1:15, all in the 215-pound class. His lone loss came at the hands of Wood River’s Andy Aguilar, falling to Aguilar in 5:55.
Senior Airan Hernandez claimed three wins in four matches for the Mustangs. Forfeit wins came against Centennial and Freeman, while pinning Wood River’s Tyler Gottlob in 3:15 in the 144-pound class. Hernandezes lone loss was a 3:25 pinfall loss to Pleasanton’s Sawyer Gillming in the 138-pound class.
Brody Schelkopf and Lane Shore both went 3-2. Shelkopf had one forfeit win, and pinned Centennial’s Nick Grantski in just 12 seconds, while gaining a 30-second pinfall win over Thayer Central’s Tyson Waldemeier, both in the 165-pound class. Schelkopf dropped matches to Freeman’s Talyn Hancock in 1:32 and Wood River’s Briggs Doane, in 3:03.
Shore earned wins over Centennial’s Tate Kitchen with a 14-11 overtime win, in the 126-pound class. Against Freeman, Shore pinned McCoy Peters in the 132-pound class with a 1:35 pin, against Pleasanton, also in the 132-pound class, Shore pinned the Bulldogs Dylan Phillips in 3:18. Shore fell to Thayer Central’s Owen LcLaughlin in 3:43, while against Wood River, the Eagles’ Hector Bonilla pinned Shore in 2:39.
Shawn Westmoreland wrapped up his day with a pair of wins in four matches. Westmoreland gained a forfeit win against Freeman, while pinning Wood River’s Carson Valasek in 1:23. Westmoreland fell at the hands of Centennial’s Kasten Ruether by way of a 29-second pin, and fell to Thayer Central’s Jaxon Krupicka, 15-12.
Aaron Sanchez and Javin Jordan both had two wins in five matches. For Sanchez, in the 285-pound weight class, the sophomore pinned Freeman’s Noah Fricke in 3:16, while against Wood River, Sanchez gained a narrow 6-4 win over the Eagles’ Landon Hauptman. Sanchez fell at the hands of Centennial’s Paul Fehlhafer in 1:09, against Pleasanton, Kenan Hasenauer pinned Sanchez in 1:18. Thayer Central’s James Bonar pinned Sanchez in 3:21.
Jordan, in the 157-pound class, pinned Centennial’s Kyle Keith in 4:38, then pinned Freeman’s Max Behrens in 43 seconds for his two wins. Losses came at the hands of Pleasanton’s Chase Gilling in 3:56. Wood River’s Brek Wiese pinned Jordan in 5:57, while Carson McLaughlin of Thayer Central pinned Jordan in 1:35.
Brian Liberato earned one win on the varsity mat with a 4:39 pinfall win over Freeman’s Skyler Mueller in the 215-pound weight class.
Cord Pope (215), and Canon Peterson (215) both fell in their lone matches at the varsity level, while Travis Moore (138), dropped a pair of varsity matches at home.

ROUND 1- Sutton defeated Centennial 45-18; Thayer Central defeated Pleasanton 60-15; and Wood River defeated Freeman 53-21.
ROUND 2- Sutton defeated Freeman 51-30; Thayer Central defeated Wood River 42-39; and Centennial defeated Pleasanton 34-30.
ROUND 3- Pleasanton defeated Sutton 42-30; Thayer Central defeated Freeman 51-30; and Wood River defeated Centennial 58-16.
ROUND 4- Wood River defeated Sutton 48-27; Thayer Central defeated Centennial 54-18; and Pleasanton defeated Freeman 48-29.
ROUND 5- Thayer Central defeated Sutton 51-24; Centennial defeated Freeman 39-18; and Wood River defeated Pleasanton 47-36.
