Sutton boys cruise past BDS, St. Cecilia & NE Christian
After and tough opening- game loss to the Freeman Falcons to start the 202425 basketball season, the Sutton Mustangs have turned a big corner. After gaining their 56-28 win over Heartland to break into the winning column back on Dec. 10, the Mustangs’ offense scorched the nets this past week.
Sutton averaged 73 points per game last week, en route to a trio of blowout victories, including a 71-40 road win at BDS in Davenport, Tuesday, Dec. 17, before crushing Hastings St. Cecilia 72-35 Friday night, and cruising to a 76-37 home win against Nebraska Christian Saturday.
Sutton’s battle in Davenport with the BDS Eagles gained the Mustangs an early 29-9 lead after the first quarter. Sutton wouldn’t look back, holding leads of 40-20 at halftime, before outscoring BDS 31-20 in the second half.

Friday night’s 72-35 win over winless Hastings St. Cecilia saw Payton Reed, Aidan Jones and Jacob Huxoll combined for 44 of the Mustangs’ 72 points, as Reed had the hot hand with 20 points, while shooting 67 percent from the floor. Jones hit for 14, while Huxoll added 10.
Weston Ohrt and Keith Kliewer both added seven, while Harrison Herndon and Myles Ferguson tossed in six points each.
During the Mustangs’ 27-2 first-quarter run, Sutton’s defense held the Bluehawks scoreless until just 38 second were left on the clock.
Sutton held a 39-16 halftime lead, and outscored St. Cecilia 33-19 in the second half to gain the 37-point victory.

In the final game before Sutton heads into the Osceola Holiday Tournament Saturday, Dec. 28, Sutton and Nebraska Christian battled close in the first quarter, with the Mustangs holding an 18-13 lead at the end of the quarter.
An explosive second quarter, which earned Sutton a 24-2 scoring run, led the Mustangs to a 42-15 halftime lead, before Sutton outscored the Eagles 34-22 in the second half to gain the 39-point victory.
Jones paced Sutton’s scoring effort with 18 points, as he drained five three-point buckets while adding a twopoint shot and going 1-2 at the foul line.
Huxoll had seven two-point shots and a free throw adding 15, while Herndon scored nine, Ohrt, eight, Reed, eight, and Kliewer, seven.
