Following a tough opening night act at Freeman High School, where the Sutton Mustangs dropped a 68-33 decision to the Falcons, the Mustangs looked to turn the corner during week two of the season. They did just that, sprinting past the Heartland Huskies 56-28 in front of the Mustangs’ home crowd to improve to 1-1 on the year.
Sutton was to take on Mc-Cool Junction Friday, Dec. 13, but weather forced the game to be postponed to Friday, Jan. 3, for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
Sutton’s defense proved to be the big story during their Dec. 10 clash with the Huskies. Sutton suffocated Heartland’s offensive effort, rolling to leads of 22-9 after the first quarter, 34-19 at the half, and 43-28 as the two teams headed into the final quarter, where Sutton’s defense tightened, holding Heartland scoreless, outscoring the Huskies 13-0 to claim the 28 point victory.
Pacing Sutton’s offensive effort was senior Harrison Herndon, as he shot just under 54 percent from the floor, making seven of 13 shots to tally 19 points.
Herndon was 5-11 from three-point range to bolster his scoring.
Junior Payton Reed added 11 points, senior Aidan Jones, 10, and junior Jacob Huxoll, eight.
As a team, Sutton shot 37.7 percent from the floor, making 20 of 53 shots, while sinking seven of 11 foul shots.
Reed, Weston Ohrt, and Huxoll combined for 18 of Sutton’s 28 rebounds, with Reed pulling down seven, Ohrt, six, and Huxoll, five.
Jones led with four assists, while Herndon made three steals to lead Sutton.
