Sutton girls notch 1st win of the season, led by 3 players in double figures
Following a pair of tough setbacks at the hands of Superior and Freeman during the opening week of the 2024-25 basketball season. The Sutton Fillies notched their first win of the season, and did it in high-flying fashion, rolling over Heartland 65-24 during the Fillies first home game of the season.
Sutton shot just over 42 percent from the floor, sinking 27 of 64 total shots on goal. The Fillies were 19-37 from two-point range (51.4%), and drained eight of 29 three-point shots (27.6%) while making just three of six foul shots (50%).
Sutton ran away from the Huskies from the onset, outscoring Heartland 20-6 in the first quarter, and 17-5 in the second to post a 37-11 halftime lead.
Sutton added a 28-13 second-half run to gain the 41-point victory and improve to 1-2 on the season.
Junior Miranda Nuss led Sutton’s scoring attack with 13 points, shooting 60-percent in the process, senior Avery Robinson tossed in 11 points, and junior Avery Smith, 10 more.
Adding to the scoring was freshman Isabella Trejo with eight, senior Jacee Haight with seven, while sophomore Jadlynn Kinney and freshman Julie Smith both added five.
Haight pulled down 11 total rebounds, five of the offensive variety, and six defensive boards, while Julie Smith brought down six.
Junior Kyla Griess and Haight both dished out four assists, while Avery Smith led in steals with four.
The Fillies were to host McCool Junction last Friday night, but weather issues have postponed their bout with the Mustangs at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 3.
