For 44 years, Jeanette Althouse has been in education, 11 in Kansas and the remaining 33 in Sutton.
For her continued dedication to the education world and those in it, she was nominated and chosen for November’s Sutton Staff Member of the Month.
Although she has since retired from teaching, Althouse still serves as a substitute teacher when needed.
In the nomination letter it stated, “Last year, Sutton Schools could not find an Ag teacher, so when asked, Jeanette said yes to teaching three periods every day to help out!”
It also noted how Althouse helped last year when a teacher broke her arm and she helped said teacher finish out the year.
“This year, she really is not a substitute, she is a full-time teacher, taking over all duties for Tessa Parish while Tessa takes care of her son who was diagnosed with cancer.
“Jeanette is not only a great friend, but one who truly cares about children and is always willing to help where needed. She is very kind and giving and deserves this award!”
Althouse began teaching in 1984, and since then has taught every grade from kindergarten to sixth grade.
In her retirement, as mentioned before, she has done some long-term subbing. Recently, she finished a long-term sub in third grade.
“My favorite subjects to teach are reading and science,” Althouse said.
Throughout her years of teaching, she said most of her enjoyment comes in the form of helping students develop the gift of loving to learn, whether that be in books or hands-on activities.
“Through all my years of teaching, I loved learning new ways to teach and keep up with the latest developments of how children learn.” For her students, past ones and any she subs for, Althouse shared some chunks of wisdom.
First, she said students should know what they love and pursue that. Students today have so many choices, which can be a blessing and a burden.
Secondly, she said to be a servant to others and they will be a leader—being important is not all it is cracked up to be, but always being there to help others is a gift you can share throughout your life.
Thirdly, keep smiling and if you’re going to do something, do it the best you can, not half-heartedly.
Last but certainly not least, she said to enjoy the people in your life—they are there by God’s divine providence.
“Being a teacher has been a privilege and honor, and I treasure all the memories of the students,” Althouse said, adding, “as far as being the staff member of the month, I am honored as a ‘re-re-retired’ teacher, as the kids say, so thank you for the nomination.”
