Senior Connor Rempe provided the big scoring surge for the Sandy Creek wrestling team, as Rempe tallied 25.5 total team points, while the Cougars, as a team, scored 44.5 in all to place 11th overall during the 15 team meet.
Red Cloud/Blue Hill outscored second place Republic County, KS by 10 points for the team title, as the Warcats finished with 149.5 team points.
Rempe’s day earned him top honors in the 138-pound weight class, winning all five of his matches by either a pin, or a technical fall.
He opened with a 40 second pin over Levi Rutten of Riverside, followed by a 27 second pin over Micheal Voorhees of Republic County. In the third round of the tournament, Rempe gained a 3:07 pin over Ian Dunze of Alma, before advancing to the championship brakets, where Rempe recorded a 4:40 technical fall by leading Logan Topp of Johnson County Central 17-1 to gain the tech fall.
In the title match, Rempe pinned Republic County’s Graham Jensen in 1:10.
Josh Spray fell short of medal contention, despite winning four of five matches in the 215 pound class. Spray opened with a 23 second pin over Bohdi Klein of Johnson County Central, before Sutton’s Billy Marshall handed Spray his lone set back with a 1:54 technical fall win over Spray.
In the consolation bracket, Spray pinned Hunter Hackel of Nebraska Christian in 39 seconds, he pinned Kenechukwu Ofoegbu of Johnson County Central in 56 seconds, before wrappin up his day with a 1:15 pinfall win over teammate Luke Soucie, to score a total of 10 team points for the Cougars.
Soucie and teammate Jackson Gerdes both earned three wins in the meet, with Gerdes adding five team points to the Cougars cause. Soucie’s wins in the 215-pound weight class came over Xugeng Tan of Meridian in 1:38, over Gerardo Becerra of Johnson County Central in 5:27, and over Montey Arteaga of Superior in two minutes.
Gerdes’ wins in the 190-pound weight class began with a 17-10 win over Sutton’s Canon Peterson, beofre pinning Hunter Meyer of Red Cloud/Blue Hill in 29 seconds. Gerdes’ final match of the day gained him a 2:57 pinfall win over David Hodges of Superior.
Jonas Amos battled strong in the 285-pound class winning two of his four matches. He opened the day with a 1:42 pin over Bradley Tobias of Republic County, and ended his day with a 54 second pinfall win over Body Schmeits of Riverside.
Felipe DeSouza in the 144-pound class and Stepan Stecaur both fell short of wins for the Cougars.
