Sandy Creek’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Overwatch team earned the champion title for the fourth year in a row at the Division 3 State Championship at Midland University Nov. 22.
Leading up to state, the Overwatch team consisting of senior Robbie Witmer; juniors Sawyer Voorhees, Alston Clark, Ashton Essink, and Nathan McDonald; and freshman Luke Soucie went 8-0 and moved up a division, going from Division 4 last year to three this year.
This not only marks the fourth state championship title, but also the fifth time heading to state—this includes three years of eSports under their belt.
“Our eSports team is growing each season and we have had a lot of success,” Head Coach Jessica Shipley said.
At the state tournament, Sandy Creek defeated Kearney Catholic, 2-0, and then earned a 2-0 over Stanton.
On Match 14, SC took on Syracuse, earning another 2-0 match, before battling Freeman in the championship round, again earning a 2-0 victory. All matches were best two of three.
The team’s efforts have certainly not gone unnoticed, having picked up attention from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, who recruited at Sandy Creek this year.
Four students were offered a chance to be evaluated, with other members having already received scholarships for eSports at other Nebraska colleges.
