Veterans Day programs are set county-wide

Veterans Day programs throughout Clay County will be Friday, Nov. 10, this year, with the annual program at Sandy Creek High School scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., while programs at Harvard and Sutton will both begin at 10 a.m.

SANDY CREEK-8:30 A.M.

Sandy Creek’s program will be highlighted by special speaker, Jesse Cunningham, a 2000 graduate of Sandy Creek High School. The presentation of the colors will be made by Cub Scout members in the fourth through 12th grades to open the ceremony at 8:30 a.m.

Musical performances will also be a part of the program, with the fourth and fifth grade choir singing “Because of You” by Teresa Jennings, while the high school and middle school combined choirs are set to sing “Rights of Our Nation,” by Joseph Compello.

Jeremy Borer and his Digital Media Class will have a special video presentation, with the middle school choir performing “Sacrifices Made” by Mike Wilson.

Secondary Principal Jason Searle will introduce the guest speaker, followed by a special medal presentation to Veterans, sponsored by Darrell Springer.

In closing, the high school choir will perform “A Tribute to the Armed Forces” arrangement by Lloyd Larson, before the colors are retired by the Sandy Creek area Scouts.

SUTTON-10 A.M.

Argonne Post #61 Commander Mike Thompson will lead the Sutton ceremony, in the theater at Sutton Public Schools.

The 10 a.m. service will begin with the Advancement of Colors by members of the Sutton American Legion Color Guard.

The Sutton High School Band will play the National Anthem, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by the Sutton Cub Scouts Pack #164.

Following a welcome by Thompson, Sherrie Bartell will address those in attendance, as president of the Sutton Argonne Post #61 Auxiliary.

Following a performance of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” by the Sutton High School Choir, Father Michael Zimmer, a Captain of the Nebraska Air National Guard’ 155th Air Refueling Wing will be the special guest speaker during the program.

Thompson will then give closing remarks before the Color Guard retires the colors.

HARVARD-10 A.M.

Harvard’s annual program in the Harvard High School gymnasium will begin at 10 a.m., with SP4 Marlin Seeman serving as the program’s special guest speaker.

After the colors are posted by the Harvard Legion Color Guard, the Cardinal Choir, under the direction of Patty Joy, will perform the National Anthem, with the Pledge of Allegiance following by all attending the program.

Joy and her Harvard Cardinal Band will then perform the “Armed Forces March.”

To close out the Harvard program, students in Harvard’s fourth and fifth grades will sing “Thank You, Soldiers,” before the colors are retired.

OTHER KNOWN EVENTS In addition to the programs at Sandy Creek, Sutton, and Harvard several other events that have been shared with the Clay County News, will also take place, Nov. 10, 11, and 12 around Clay County, including:

• A luncheon following the Sutton service Friday, Nov. 10, at the Sutton American Legion Club;

• The Sutton American Legion will also be hosting a meal on Saturday, Nov. 11 for all Veterans;

• The Glenvil American Legion is hosting a roast beef sandwich meal, served by the Glenvil Legion Auxiliary, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Legion;

• The Edgar American Legion will also be hosting a Veterans Day supper on Saturday, Nov. 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m., with special Quilt of Valor presentations being made at 6:30 p.m.
