It’s post season time for county teams

THE BULL

Crunch time has hit for all of our athletic teams, as the football and volleyball teams are set to begin the post-season this week. Over the course of the past couple of weeks, the cross country season has taken part in their respective district meet runs, while the Sutton girls golf team wrapped up their season with an impressive fifth-place finish in the Class C state tournament in North Platte.

With that big showing by the Fillies golf team, in just their third year as a program, I think that Sam Newmyer and his squad have served notice to the Class C world that Sutton is a team to be reckoned with in the future. Congratulations to the Fillies; keep on building and working hard in the off-season.

Sandy Creek’s girls cross country season...WOW, what a year for the Cougars under the direction of coaches Jenni Stengel and Corbin Hansen. The Cougars are young, talented, and will step onto the biggest stage of their young careers this Friday at the Class D state meet in Kearney, with the SC girls running at 3:30 p.m.

Madalyn Andersen will be making her second trip to Kearney, as she qualified as a freshman last season, and newcomers to the distance running scene at Sandy Creek, freshmen Madison Shaw and Paige Stengel, will hit the Kearney Country Club course for the first time.

As you will read this week, the Cougars placed second as a team, just five points behind McCool Junction in the D-4 District meet. The Cougars will certainly catch some notice in the Class D field this Friday as the SC trio embarks on their biggest stage of the season.

It’s no secret with the social media posts that have been going on across the board that Sandy Creek and Sutton football have advanced to the Class D-1 state playoffs Thursday, Oct. 24.

In regard to Sandy Creek, it’s absolutely no secret that these dudes are good, they’re damn good as a matter of fact, and they’ll show the Niobrara- Verdigre Cougars just how good they are Thursday afternoon when the Cougar Challenge kicks off at 3 p.m. on the hill east of Fairfield. Sutton’s challenge will be another really good football team in the Arapahoe Warriors, as the 5-3 Mustangs head to the 7-1 Warriors home field Thursday night to battle it out at 6:30 p.m.

Then, the last to jump into post-season action in Clay County will be our three volleyball teams. As of the writing of this week’s Bull, it is not known what the pairings will be for Harvard, Sandy Creek, and Sutton, but what is known, all three teams will most likely be traveling for their first-round matches. Stay tuned for our social media accounts (Facebook and Instagram) for the slate of action for the Cardinals, Cougars, and Fillies.

Good luck to the SC girls running the 5000-meter course in Kearney this Friday, to the Cougar and Mustang football teams as they start their playoff runs Thursday, and certainly to our volleyball teams as they venture into the time of year called “one and done” time, meaning, a lose ends the season, a win keeps teams playing.
