Sutton girls golf building as one of Class C’s top teams during 3rd season
The Sutton Fillies, making their first-ever appearance in the Nebraska girls state Class C Golf Championships, walked off of the Lake Maloney Golf Course south of North Platte, Tuesday, Oct. 15, with a little swagger, after battling an extremely strong field of 15 teams for the two-day tournament. Sutton finished fifth as a team to be considered as a leading team amongst all Class C teams in the state.
The Wayne Blue Devils and Minden Whippets stood out as the clear powerhouses of the class, playing neck and neck throughout the tournament, with Wayne gaining the Class C state title by one stroke over Minden, 696-697.
The battle for the next three places in the final team standings proved to be another battle within a battle between West Holt High School of Atkinson, Scotus Central Catholic of Columbus, and the Fillies.
When the dust settled, West Holt edged Scotus by 12 strokes, 739-751, while Scotus topped the Fillies by just three strokes, 751-754.
In the field of 93 total golfers, Sutton missed a top 15 medal winner, but was led by a very balanced attack to gain the top five team finish.
Senior Chole Bergen led Sutton throughout the tournament, carding a 91 on day one, and a 95 on day two to place her tied for 23rd with Jacqueline Gloy of Grant/Perkins County with a two-day 186.
Junior Mia Ochsner owned 29th place all on her own and finished the 36 holes of play over the course of the two days with a 189, shooting an opening round 92, followed by a day two 97.
Shepleigh Ohrt wrapped up play in North Platte tied for 32nd overall with Brunn Smith of Minden, as the Sutton sophomore shot scores of 99 on day one, before shaving seven strokes off her day one score to card a 92 on day two.
Senior Avery Robinson finished in a three-way tie for 40th place overall with Shelby Nelson of Minden and Brinley Kerkman of West Holt. Robinson opened the tournament with a 94 on day one, and followed up with a 102 on day two to wrap up the tournament with a 196.
Junior Laurel Moore, in the end, finished in a four-way tie for 51st place with Ellie Sendgraff of Archbishop Bergan of Fremont, Keira Hestekind of Battle Creek, and Skylar Swanson of Laurel-Concord/Coleridge. Moore, who started with a tough 107 on day one, battled back big time with an impressive 94 on day two, to end in the four-way tie with a score of 201.
