Fillies state bound

Sutton girls claim C-1 district golf championship; 4 individual medalists led by senior Chloe Bergen’s 92
Fillies state bound

If there was ever a time for a team to turn up the heat, the Sutton Fillies golf team certainly knows how to do it. The Fillies captured a program first Monday, Oct. 7, winning the Class C, District 1 girls golf championship over Exeter-Milligan/Friend by a mere three strokes.

The battle between the Fillies and Bobcats was a challenge throughout the 18-hole tournament on Lincoln’s Hidden Valley Golf course. When the dust settled at the end of the sixto- seven hour tournament, Sutton had risen to the top of the C-1 District, outscoring EMF 381-384, as both teams punched their ticket to next week’s Class C state tournament in North Platte, on the Lake Maloney Golf Course, Oct. 14 and 15.

During Monday’s outing in Lincoln, Sutton also outscored the third team to advance to North Platte, the Crusaders of Lincoln Christian, by an amazing 50 strokes, as the Crusaders finished third with a team score of 431.

The Fillies’ program, only in it’s third season and directed by coach Sam Newmyer, took huge steps this season with several team titles and runner-up finishes, and each week, the well-balanced Fillies team seemingly had different individual leaders.

Leading the Fillies to the district crown this week was senior Chloe Bergen.

Bergen led all five Fillies with a fourth-place 92; all five Sutton girls finished in the top 15 in the field of 57 total golfers.

Bergen’s 92 was followed directly by junior Mia Ochsner’s fifth-place 93.

Two other top 10 medalists for Sutton included junior Laurel Moore and sophomore Shepleigh Ohrt, as both Moore and Ohrt, along with Kambrie Hinton of Lincoln Christian, finished their 18-hole rounds tied for 10th place with identical scores of 98.

Senior Avery Robinson closed out the day for Sutton with a 101 to finish in a three-way tie for 15th with Dylen Collier of EMF and Karolyn Ozenbaugh of BDS.

Heartland’s Mia Hiebner earned the outright individual district championship with an 85. Rayne Biltoft of Superior finished second with an 86, with Abigail Klooz of EMF finishing third, just ahead of Bergen, with a 92 as well.

TEAM SCORES: Sutton 381, Exeter-Millgian/ Friend (EMF) 384, Lincoln Christian 431, Auburn 456, Ashland-Greenwood 471, BDS 486, Johnson County Central 502, Syracuse 543. No team scores: Heartland, Fairbury, Humbolt-Table Rock-Steinauer, Lincoln Lutheran, Palmyra, Superior, and Tri County.
