Sandy Creek, after a dominating 60-8 win last week over the Johnson-Brock Eagles, had a true test during week two of the season. Shelby-Rising City came to Cougarland with both teams well-coached and physical all around the ball.
The Cougars came into the game ranked second in Class D-1, while the Huskies were ranked number four, but Sandy Creek, behind a 22-point second-quarter run, outlasted Shelby-Rising City 28-6.
This game was a defensive battle, as both teams held each other scoreless in two of the four quarters of play.
In the first quarter of the game, Sandy Creek and Shelby-Rising City were switching back and forth on possessions of the ball frequently, as both of their defenses had a bend-butdon’t- break mantra about them, coming up with multiple stops, that is, until the second quarter.
With 6:52 left in the period, Sandy Creek posted the game’s first points on the scoreboard, with an Ethan Shaw to Wes Biltoft oneyard touchdown pass, with Shaw adding the two-point conversion to make it Cougars 8-0 over the Huskies.
The Cougars’ defense would stand tall again and get a stop, and then a Connor Rempe 28-yard punt return would set it up for a Shaw strike over the middle to Kamerin Sealey for an 11-yard touchdown pass, to make it Cougars 14 Huskies zero.
Defensively on the next drive, Sealey would play great defense on a Huskies’ pass and come up with an interception on the Cougars’ 17-yard line, to set up a huge pass play from Shaw to Rempe, covering 63 yards for an SC touchdown. Shaw again added the two-point conversion run to make it SC 22-0.
After halftime in the third quarter, both defenses from wouldn’t allow a score, before Shelby-Rising City got on the board with a two-yard touchdown run to make it SC 22-6 with 11:51 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars would score one last time with 6:51 left in the fourth quarter to seal the deal with a Shaw five-yard touchdown run to make the final score Cougars 28-6.
Cougars offensive stats had Shaw ending the night with 165 yards in the air on 12 completions on 18 attempts.
Shaw would also lead in rushing yards with 93 on 22 carries, Rempe would have 19 yards rushing on two carries, and Sealey had seven yards on two carries. Rempe had 93 receiving yards on five receptions, Sealey had 47 yards receiving on three receptions, Biltoft had 11 yards receiving on three receptions, and Ben Sullivan had 14 yards on one reception.
Five Cougars reached double figures on the tackle charts, led by 14 total stops for Rempe and Alston Clark. Sealey and Biltoft both charted 13 stops in the win, while Hudson Devlin posted 10 tackles in the victory.
Shaw and Jack Clark both were in on nine tackles, while Jacob Petr gained four.
