Our healthcare costs are out of control

2 weeks and counting, not that I’m counting

Busy comes and busy goes, and in about two weeks, busy will be the pace for most days, not that each week isn’t busy for all of us. This past weekend I caught myself thinking back “a few years,” to the early 80s when I was in high school. I remember how much I always liked it when school geared back up, and of course the football season took front and center in the Duncan household.

I wasn’t the best football player by any means, and the teams I played on were average at best for the most part, but I think the biggest thing for me was just getting back into a routine with my friends.

Monday was the first official day of fall sports practices for our three county schools, and of course, the entire state of Nebraska. Most teams have already been busy building up for the 2024 fall sports season with summertime camps, workouts, and team events taking place.

To me, as school begins this week in Clay County, the end of the summer officially hits for me as we’ll be chasing games, activities, and events all over the place.

Sutton’s girls golf team will be the first to jump into action with a dual set to take place with Central City next Thursday, Aug. 22.

It’s the final week of August when everyone jumps into action and the so-called fun begins.

For our staff at CCN, it means it’s time to dust off the lenses and get ready to roll.

As you will see in our Aug. 28 issue, which will feature the 2024 Fall Sports Preview, action will hit full force Aug. 29 and 30.

All three volleyball teams in the county will see action on the road Aug. 29, as Sutton heads to Adams Central High School, Sandy Creek travels to Blue Hill for triangular action with the host Bobcats and Meridian, while Harvard’s volleyball team ventures up north to St. Edward for triangular action with the hosts and Heartland Lutheran.

Cross Country also starts up for the Sandy Creek harriers, heading to the Auburn Invitational on the 29th. Harvard’s cross country team won’t see action until Sept. 5 when they challenge the field at the Gibbon Invite. Our local football teams hit the gridiron Friday, Aug. 30, with Harvard and Sandy Creek both having home games, with the Cardinals hosting Diller-Odell, and the Cougars taking on Class D-2 perennial power, Johnson- Brock.

Sutton makes the quick trip to McCool Junction to open the 2024 season in a battle of the Mustangs.

As I said in the headline of the Bull this week, not that I’m counting, even though I really am, the 2024-25 school year, as with any school year, always takes me a little while to adjust to the constant schedule of activities. Some days are hard to get my motor running, unlike over 40 years ago when I was the one that was excited for the start of school and all the activities that come with the start of the year.

I think the older I get, the harder it gets for my motor to run on all cylinders. I think my personal motor has dropped from a six-cylinder motor to a four-cylinder motor.

I am excited to see how our students gear up for the new sports seasons, as well as the added activities that come with the start of a school year. We’ll see you all off and on the sidelines of our fall sports activities.
