June 16, 1944 ~ August 6, 2024

June 16, 1944 ~ August 6, 2024

Sutton resident Dayle Allen DuBois, 80, passed away just a month and a half after celebrating his 80th birthday on June 16. He passed away peacefully Aug. 6, 2024, at Heritage Crossings in Geneva.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, at the Federated Church in Sutton, with Pastor Edison Toe officiating. Interment followed at the Sutton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Federated Church or a special fund in Dayle’s name to the Lovewell Lake State Park in Webber, KS. Attn: Kids Fishing Clinic. Condolences may be left at www. suttonmemorial.com. Dayle was born June 16, 1944, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva to Leland and Louise (Messman) DuBois. He grew up on a farm south of Strang. He went to elementary school through eighth grade in 1958 at Strang and graduated from Bruning High School in Bruning in 1963.

On Oct. 27, 1965, he married Marlene McLaughlin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton. Through this union, they raised four children. They made their first home together outside of Bruning on a small farm, later moving into town as their family grew. Dayle was a member of the Bruning Fire Department and a Bruning EMT. He was employed at Messman Fertilizer Plant, drove a semi-truck for a few years enjoying the sights of several states, and the Thayer County Roads Department for many years.

Some of Dayle’s highlights while living in Bruning were playing cards (13-point pitch) with their neighborhood friends. Summertime was always time for their huge gardens every year. Warm weather brought on his fishing itch. He made helping the Philippi family with their catfish business a summer family affair for many years. To Dayle, every season was “fishing and camping season.”

In 1978, they moved to Saronville. Dayle worked with Marlene’s family for several years on the family farm. Later, he worked for the Clay County Roads Dept., running the maintainer for over 20 years. Dayle was notorious for starting at 3 a.m. during the winter storms, making sure the roads were open for the school busses and farmers. During the fall evenings, he would help the Ham and VanGroningen family with harvest. Endless shenanigans between these three men occurred throughout the entire year.

Dayle was a member of the Federated Church in Sutton, a Village of Saronville board member, a Sutton Township board member, a Lovewell Lake Grounds Monitor, and self-appointed Lake BS Ranger. He was an avid fisherman, held many Master Angler Awards in fish stories, and a Captain of several boats. He loved pulling the grandkids behind the boat to see who he could dump first.

Dayle is survived by his wife of 58 and a half years, Marlene DuBois of Sutton; daughters, Carmen (Joe) Huber, Annette (Ty) Yost, Teresa (Jason) Majors all of Sutton; son, Gerald (Wendy) DuBois of Harvard; grandchildren, Brooke (Ross) Sukup, Lauren (Ryan) Pedersen, Shelby (Brock) Kohtz, Brody (Rachel) Yost, Gavin Majors, Kane (Mikaela) Majors, Logan Majors, Samantha (Cameron) Jordan, Jarod (Dorie) DuBois, Cody (Amber) DuBois; great-grandchildren: Maddox, Jackson and Sawyer Sukup, Mila and Brody Pedersen, Hadlee Kohtz, Elsie Yost, Abel, Henley, and Rose Jordan, Desirae, Adalyn, and Tobias DuBois; brother, Glenn (Delores) DuBois; brothers-in-Law, Eugene (Shelly) McLaughlin and Brad Brush; numerous relatives, friends, and all of his favorite caregivers he leaves behind.

Dayle was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Louise DuBois; parents-in-law, Gerald and Viola McLaughlin; sisters-in-law, Maureen Brush and Judy (McLaughlin) Yost; niece, Lisa McLaughlin; cousin, Kathy Larkin.
