Action in the Ralph Jilg Memorial Senior Legion baseball tournament in Silver Creek proved to be a tough weekend of action for the Sutton Seniors, as the Post 61 crew earned one win in three games to see their 2024 record fall to 6-6 on the year.

Sutton opened tournament play Friday, June 28, against Twin River, starting with an offensive feel, as Twin River earned a 7-5 lead after the first three innings of play.

Sutton’s offense, however, cooled off in the final four innings, as Twin River outscored the Mustangs 4-0 to post the 11-5 victory.

Weston Ohrt was charged with the loss, as in five innings of work, Ohrt allowed seven hits and eight runs, while giving up four walks. Ohrt retired four Twin River hitters through strikeouts.

In relief, DJ Hajny worked one inning, striking out two, while allowing four hits and three runs.

At the plate, Cash Parrish tried to keep the Sutton offense on track, as he was 2-3 with a pair of singles. Kaleb Ostrander was 1-2 with one run driven in, while Caleb Reiners, Wyatt Pollet, and Payton Reed were all 1-3.

Day two of tournament action in Silver Creek pitted Sutton against Class C traditional powerhouse DCB (Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus). The ways of life that Sutton dealt with in their six-run loss to Twin River didn’t change against DCB, as Sutton was outhit 11-3 in a 13-2 loss.

After an opening-inning scoreless tie, DCB outscored Sutton 5-2 in the second and third innings, then added four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to ice the victory over the Post 61 Seniors.

Creighton Jones suffered the loss on the mound for the Mustangs. In three and two-thirds innings of work, Jones struck out three, while allowing nine runs on eight hits, and gave up six walks.

Carson Mau, in one inning of relief, gave up two runs on two hits while walking one, while Reiners allowed two runs on one hit, while issuing four walks.

Ohrt had the only extra- base hit for Sutton, with a double, while Reed and Reiners both singled in the loss.

Sutton was finally able to get their offense on track during action against David City, Sunday, June 30, but not until after David City opened the game with four runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.

Sutton then slowly chipped away at the David City lead with single runs in the third and fourth. Sutton then broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning and a three-run sixth inning to gain a 10-4 win and move their record to 6-6 on the year.

Aidan Jones earned the win on the hill, as Jones struck out 13, while walking four, and giving up four runs on five hits. In relief, Hajny struck out two to seal the win for Sutton.

Reiners had three of Sutton’s nine hits with a trio of singles that would collectively drive in four runs.

Carson Mau had the big hit in the win with a triple that drove in two runs.

Adding singles to the win were Ohrt, Reed, Parrish, Aidan Jones, and Ostrander. Ostrander drove in two runs, while Reed and Parrish drove in one each.
