Carnival set-up closes parts of Saunders for Dugout Days

South Saunders Avenue was closed on Tuesday for Carnival setup and will remain closed through Saturday night, for the annual Dugout Days festivities, which runs June 27-29.

South Saunders Avenue was closed on Tuesday for Carnival setup and will remain closed through Saturday night, for the annual Dugout Days festivities, which runs June 27-29.

Additionally, Saunders Ave. will be closed from Cedar to Beech Streets in front of the Federated Church Saturday morning, to allow for safe crossing during the Edgerton demonstrations.

Dugout Days, themed “Sutton: Building Our Home For All Generations,” will begin Thursday with the opening of the carnival at 5 p.m.

THURSDAY, JUNE 27

In addition to the carnival, the opening day of this year’s celebration includes food and drink specials at the Flat River Grill from 5-10 p.m., as well as a wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres at the Sutton American Legion from 5-7 p.m.

FRIDAY, JUNE 28

Day two of the 2024 celebrations kicks off with swimming activities at the Sutton Aquatic Center from 11 a.m.-noon.

Cornerstone Bank’s annual kids fishing contest begins at 1 p.m. at Clarks Pond.

The Sutton Federated Church then sponsors a free swimming event at the Sutton Aquatic Center from 3-5 p.m., while the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department’s annual chicken barbeque runs from 5-7 p.m., at the City Park. Advanced tickets can be purchased for the barbeque at both Cornerstone Bank locations and at Astra Bank.

Food and drink specials will be available at the Flat River Grill from 5-10 p.m., while the Sutton American Legion will have a fish buffet beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Friday evening wraps up with cow bingo, sponsored by the Eastside Livestock 4-H Club, beginning at 6 p.m. at the City Park.

The Little Tuggers Tractor Pull begins in the City Park at 6:30 p.m., while the Sutton Legion will have a beer garden and live music, running from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

SATURDAY, JUNE 29

Saturday’s activities begin with the annual Run for a Resident 5K and 1-mile run, starting at 7:45 a.m., at the Sutton Community Home.

Several activities in the City Park follow, with Kona Ice available from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., sponsored by the Sutton summer girls basketball team.

The Pour Horse Coffee trailer will also be available in the City Park from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Sutton FFA Chapter will once again host its annual dodgeball tournament from 9 a.m.-noon. Sign-up for the tournament is at the Sweet Treat.

The Sutton Boy Scouts will be selling beef sticks and walking tacos from 9 a.m.-noon in the City Park.

The Rolling Peach Boutique will be open in the City Park from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., while Weathered Whatnots and Wilma will also be in the City Park beginning at 9 a.m.

The Sutton Area Chamber of Commerce’s kids races are slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. in City Park, while the bounce house action is slated to run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., also in the City Park.

The Edgerton Explorit Center in Aurora will be at the Sutton Federated Church to give demonstrations from 10-11 a.m.

The Friesen Auto Group will host its annual car show at the Butler Estates, just south of the Federated Church from 10 a.m.2:30 p.m.

Other morning activities include: hot dogs and nachos, by the Town and Country Lassies 4-H Club, beginning at 10:30 a.m. A Chick-fil-A Food Truck will be at the City Park starting at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Sutton volleyball team. The Sutton Legion will be hosting lunch and polka music at the Legion from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., while Astra Bank will sponsor their annual coin scramble in the City Park beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Afternoon events kick off with a pickleball doubles tournament at the City Park. To enter, call Brittany Hultman at 402-984-8322.

Aspegren Repair will hold a “Power Wheels Demo Derby at their business location at 1004 East Maple Street beginning at 2 p.m. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m.

Aspegren Repair also brings back their Burnout Contest, getting underway at 3 p.m. Registration for this event also begins at 1:30 p.m.

Evening events, along with the carnival, include: the Knights of Columbus pork barbeque, starting at 5 p.m. Food and drink specials are also hosted by the Flat River Grill beginning at 5 p.m., with the Sutton Legion holding a prime rib buffet from 5:30-9 p.m.

The Legion will also be hosting the Dillon Gaige Band, along with their beer garden, from 9 p.m.-1 a.m.

DUGOUT PARADE

The 2024 Dugout Days Parade will take off from Sutton High School’s parking lot at 6 p.m., heading south down Saunders. Pre-registration is set for 5:15 p.m. This year’s theme for the parade is: “Building our Home for all Ages.”

SUNDAY, JUNE 30

The final day of the 2024 celebration in Sutton will feature the 11th annual Dugout Open golf tournaments.

The adult/child tournament will be a nine-hole alternate shot tournament, beginning at 11 a.m.

The two-person nine-hole scramble tournament follows at 2 p.m.

To sign-up for either tournament, there are sign-up sheets at the Fox Hollow Golf Course, or by calling Tony Huber at 402-314-8375 The Jamber-Q food truck, operated by Jeremiah and Amber Peterson, will operate at the Fox Hollow Golf Course from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Additionally, the Sutton Legion will be open from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for a broasted chicken buffet.
