Mary Ann Nuss, age 88, of Hastings, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, at Mary Lanning Healthcare.

A funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13, at the Chapel of Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Pastor Rick Bartek will officiate. Interment will follow in the Stockham Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Higby- McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Memorials may be made to the family to designate at a later date. Mary Ann Nuss, the daughter of Nathan G. and Ruby Marie (Salmon) Nuss, was born in Sutton on Jan. 15, 1935. Mary Ann’s mother passed away when she was just five weeks old. She was raised in the Stockham area by her aunt and uncle until she was 14 and then went to live with her father. Mary Ann attended Bingville and Verona Country Schools. She graduated from Aurora High School in 1952. Mary Ann worked at the Farmers Union Creamery in Aurora from 1952-60. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1965 and went on to complete graduate work at UNK and the University of Oklahoma.

She began her teaching career at the Minden Public Schools from 1965-70, Exeter Public Schools from 1970-71, Red Cloud Public Schools from 1972-92. Mary Ann moved to Hollister, MO to be a substitute teacher from 1994-2002, working at Mutton Hollow from 1993-2000 and Shepard of the Hills from 2001-02. After retiring, Mary Ann traveled to many countries throughout the world. She made her home in Hastings in 2004. Mary Ann was a member of the Harvard Saddle Club, 4-H, NEA, Nebraska Reading Teachers and served as secretary for UNLR. She was preceded in death by her parents. Those left to cherish her memory are her cousins, family members and friends.
