Laura Hulda (Trautman) Nunnenkamp was born Oct. 23, 1923, to Reuben and Margaret (Klein) Trautman on their farm near Grafton. As an infant she became a child of God through the washing of Holy Baptism. She was confirmed June 5, 1938. Her confirmation verse was Jeremiah 7:23 “Obey me, and I will be our God and you will be my people. Walk in all the ways I command you that it may go well with you.” She attended rural country school near Grafton and graduated from the 8th grade.

While in service during WWII, her brother Edwin introduced her “by mail” to a friend, Fred Nunnenkamp. After three plus years of a letter-writing romance, they finally met and started dating. They were united in marriage on Feb. 6, 1947, at her parents’ farm north of Grafton. The Lord blessed this union with four children, three sons and one daughter. The couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. They extended this to 69 years of marriage until Fred’s passing in 2016.

They lived and farmed south of Aurora for five years. They then bought a farm west of Sutton where they farmed and retired. Laura loved to garden both vegetables and flowers. She fixed many bouquets for church and canned many vegetables and fruits for the winter. Sewing, quilting embroidery and writing in her journals were among her hobbies as well. She also loved to bake. Her buns, cinnamon rolls, kuchen, and pies were the best! No one left her home hungry.

Family was very important to her and she thoroughly loved her visits from the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laura was a member of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sutton until it closed, and then became a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grafton. While a member at St. Mark’s, she was an active member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society serving in all offices. She also taught Sunday school for 18 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; parents, Reuben and Margaret Trautman; parents-inlaw, William and Elizabeth; daughter-in-law, Barbara Nunnenkamp; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin and Bernice Trautman; Don and Sedonia Trautman; brothersin- law and sisters-in-law, John and Elizabeth Nunnenkamp, Wilbur and Laura Nunnenkamp, Harold and Maria Nunnenkamp, Eugene and Justina Nunnenkamp, Leroy and Luetta Nunnenkamp and George and Pruda Nunnenkamp; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Leatha and Clyde Mortensen, Leala and Wayne Livingston, and Dean MacDonald.
